Step 10: Improve URLs
Step 10: Improve URLs
What is a URL?
A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the web address of a page on a website.
Examples:
https://rootlearning.comhttps://rootlearning.com/abouthttps://rootlearning.com/contact
Each page should have a URL that clearly describes its content.
Why do you need descriptive URLs?
A good URL helps:
Google understand what the page is about.
Visitors know what to expect before they click.
Make links easier to read and share.
Example
❌ Poor URL
https://rootlearning.com/page3
Problems:
Doesn't describe the page.
Not user-friendly.
Doesn't include relevant keywords.
✅ Better URL
https://rootlearning.com/online-tutoring
Google and visitors immediately know the page is about online tutoring.
Another example:
https://rootlearning.com/preschool-tutoring
This clearly indicates the page is about preschool tutoring.
What should you work on?
1. Check every page URL
Look for URLs that are:
Too long.
Contain random numbers or symbols.
Don't describe the page.
Examples:
❌
https://example.com/page?id=123
❌
https://example.com/service001
✅
https://example.com/web-design
2. Include the main keyword
If the page is about online tutoring, the URL should reflect that.
Examples:
/online-tutoring/math-tutoring/reading-tutor
3. Keep URLs short
Use only the necessary words.
❌
/our-best-online-tutoring-services-for-preschool-children
✅
/preschool-tutoring
4. Use hyphens (-)
Separate words with hyphens.
✅
online-tutoring-for-children
Avoid underscores or spaces.
❌
online_tutoring
❌
online tutoring
5. Use lowercase letters
Keep URLs simple and consistent.
✅
online-tutoring
❌
OnlineTutoring
Important
If a page is already live and receiving visitors, don't just change its URL. Set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Otherwise, visitors may get a 404 Page Not Found error, and existing search rankings can be affected.
Tools for Step 10
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| WordPress Editor | Change the page's URL (also called the permalink). |
| Yoast SEO or Rank Math | Check overall on-page SEO after changing the URL. |
| Redirection (WordPress plugin) | Create 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones. |
| Google Search Console | Monitor indexing and identify any crawl errors after URL changes. |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Find broken links or old URLs that need updating. |
Where do you change the URL?
In WordPress:
Log in to the dashboard.
Open the page or post.
Edit the Permalink or URL Slug.
Save or update the page.
If the page already existed, create a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.
Your output for Step 10
By the end of this step, every important page should have:
✅ A short, descriptive URL.
✅ The page's main keyword in the URL (where appropriate).
✅ Hyphens separating words.
✅ Lowercase letters.
✅ 301 redirects for any URLs that were changed.
Descriptive URLs make your website easier for both users and search engines to understand.
