SEO: Step 1: Get the Website URL

At Step 1, you're not fixing anything yet. Your job is to understand the website and make notes. Think of it like inspecting a house before renovating it.

Step 1: Get the Website URL

Ask the client

Can you send me your website URL?

Example:

https://rootlearning.com

Why?

You need the URL so you can inspect the website before making any SEO changes.

What should you work on?

1. Does the website open?

Check:

  • Does it load successfully?

  • Does it show any errors?

Tool:

  • Any web browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox)

2. Is the website secure?

Check:

  • Does the URL start with https://?

  • Is there a padlock icon in the browser?

Tool:

  • Web browser

3. Browse every page

Visit pages such as:

  • Home

  • About

  • Services

  • Products

  • Contact

  • Blog

Check:

  • Do all pages load?

  • Are any pages missing or showing "404 Not Found"?

  • Is the navigation easy to use?

Tool:

  • Web browser

4. Check the website design

Ask yourself:

  • Does it look professional?

  • Is the text easy to read?

  • Are the images clear?

  • Are buttons easy to find?

Tool:

  • Web browser

5. Test on a mobile phone

Many visitors use mobile devices.

Check:

  • Does the layout fit the screen?

  • Is the text readable without zooming?

  • Are buttons easy to tap?

Tool:

  • Your smartphone or Chrome Developer Tools (Device Mode)

6. Look for obvious problems

Examples:

  • Broken images

  • Spelling mistakes

  • Missing logo

  • Slow-loading pages

  • Broken links

  • Missing contact information

Tool:

  • Web browser

7. Write down your findings

Create a simple checklist like this:

ItemStatusNotes
Website opens✅Loads correctly
HTTPS enabled✅Secure connection
Homepage✅Looks good
About page✅No issues
Contact page❌Contact form not working
Mobile friendly⚠️Text too small on some pages
Broken images❌Two images missing on Services page
Navigation✅Easy to use

Tools for Step 1

ToolPurpose
Google Chrome (or another browser)Visit the website and inspect pages
SmartphoneCheck the mobile experience
Notepad, Google Docs, or Microsoft WordRecord your observations
Chrome Developer Tools (optional)Simulate different screen sizes

Goal of Step 1

By the end of this step, you should be able to answer questions like:

  • Is the website working?

  • Is it secure?

  • Are all important pages present?

  • Does it look professional?

  • Are there any obvious usability or content issues?

Once you've completed this inspection, you're ready to move on to the next SEO step: checking how Google sees the website (indexing and search performance).
