SEO: Step 4: Keyword Research
Step 4: Keyword Research
What is Keyword Research?
Keyword research is the process of finding the exact words and phrases that your potential customers type into Google when looking for the products or services your client offers.
For example, if someone needs a tutor, they won't search for "Root Learning" unless they already know the brand. They are more likely to search for:
Online tutoring for children
Math tutor near me
English tutor for kids
Your goal is to discover these search terms and optimize the website for them.
Why do you need Keyword Research?
Without keyword research:
You may optimize the website for terms nobody searches for.
You might miss opportunities to attract potential customers.
With keyword research:
You understand what people are searching for.
You create pages that match those searches.
You increase the chances of the website appearing in Google results.
Ask the client
Ask questions such as:
Which services do you most want to promote?
What words do customers usually use when contacting you?
Are there any products or services you want to prioritize?
If the client doesn't know, that's okay—you'll do the research.
What should you work on?
1. Find Main Keywords
These are the primary keywords for important pages.
Example (Root Learning):
Online tutoring for children
Online math tutor
English tutor for kids
2. Find Related Keywords
These support the main keyword.
Examples:
Preschool tutoring
Homework help for children
One-on-one tutoring
Certified online tutors
Virtual learning for kids
3. Assign One Main Keyword Per Page
| Website Page | Main Keyword |
|---|---|
| Home | Online tutoring for children |
| Math Tutoring | Online math tutor |
| English Tutoring | Reading tutor for kids |
| About Us | Certified online tutors |
| Contact | Contact online tutor |
Avoid trying to rank one page for many unrelated keywords.
4. Check Search Volume and Competition
Look at:
How many people search for the keyword each month.
How competitive it is.
Whether it matches the client's business goals.
Tools for Step 4
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Keyword Planner | Find keyword ideas and monthly search volumes |
| Google Search | See autocomplete suggestions and "People also ask" |
| Google Trends | Compare keyword popularity over time |
| Ubersuggest | Discover keyword ideas and SEO difficulty (free and paid features) |
| Ahrefs Keywords Explorer | Advanced keyword research and competition analysis |
| Semrush Keyword Magic Tool | Keyword ideas, search volume, and difficulty |
Example
Imagine your client owns a bakery.
Google Keyword Planner might suggest:
| Keyword | Monthly Searches |
|---|---|
| Birthday cakes | 8,000 |
| Wedding cakes | 5,000 |
| Cakes near me | 12,000 |
| Custom cakes | 2,500 |
You could then optimize:
Home page: Cakes near me
Birthday Cakes page: Birthday cakes
Wedding Cakes page: Wedding cakes
Your output for Step 4
By the end of this step, you should have a keyword list like this:
| Page | Main Keyword | Related Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Online tutoring for children | Online learning, certified tutors, one-on-one tutoring |
| Math Tutoring | Online math tutor | Math lessons, math teacher, math help |
| English Tutoring | Reading tutor for kids | English tutor, reading classes, literacy support |
This keyword map guides how you'll optimize each page in the next step.
