SEO: Step 2: Ask the Business Goal

Step 2: Ask the Business Goal

Ask the client

What do you want SEO to achieve?

This is one of the most important questions because SEO should support the client's business objectives, not just increase website traffic.

Why do you need this?

The client's goal determines your SEO strategy.

For example:

  • If they want more sales, you'll focus on product pages and purchase-related keywords.

  • If they want more phone calls, you'll optimize contact pages and local SEO.

  • If they want more enquiries, you'll improve service pages and contact forms.

  • If they want more blog readers, you'll focus on informational content.

Without knowing the goal, you won't know what success looks like.

Examples

Example 1: Online School

Client says:

"We want more parents to enroll their children in our online tutoring."

Your SEO goal:
Increase enrollments through Google Search.

Example 2: Restaurant

Client says:

"We want more people to book tables."

Your SEO goal:
Increase table bookings from organic search.

Example 3: Real Estate Company

Client says:

"We want more people to contact us about properties."

Your SEO goal:
Generate more qualified property enquiries.

Example 4: E-commerce Store

Client says:

"We want to sell more shoes online."

Your SEO goal:
Increase online sales through organic search.

What should you work on after getting the goal?

Once the client tells you their goal, identify:

  • Which pages are most important (home, services, product pages, contact page, etc.).

  • Which actions you want visitors to take (buy, call, book, register, or fill out a form).

  • Which keywords people might search for to find those pages.

For example, if the goal is to get more tutoring enrollments, you might later target keywords like:

  • Online tutoring

  • Math tutor

  • English lessons for children

  • Online learning for kids

Tools for Step 2

You don't need any SEO software for this step. Instead, use tools to document the client's answers.

ToolPurpose
Notepad, Google Docs, or Microsoft WordRecord the client's goals and requirements
Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp, or phone callDiscuss the business goals with the client (if needed)
Email or messaging appConfirm the agreed SEO objectives in writing

Your output for Step 2

By the end of this step, you should have a clear statement like:

Business Goal: Increase online tutoring enrollments.

SEO Goal: Improve Google rankings for tutoring-related keywords to attract more qualified visitors and convert them into enrollments.

This goal will guide every SEO decision you make in the following steps.
